While the others sleep…

Okay, right off the bat, please let me provide you with a “possible-cheesy-line-ahead” warning. Yes, I am about to quote from the actor, Will Smith.

But, it’s something that has stuck with me for a long time, and I think it can be a helpful bit of advice.

A few years ago, I watched an interview on 60 Minutes, with Will Smith. The interviewer asked him what he though the secret was to his success…. Mr. Smith responded with, “While everyone else was sleeping, I was working. While everyone else was eating, I was training. While everyone else having fun, I was brainstorming ideas for new projects, while everyone else was….”. I think you get it.

Now, I’m not here to say that working 60 hours a week will solve all your problems. Along with hard work, there needs to be other factors at play to help a business succeed (good leadership, a great product or service, etc..)

But, I have never been able to get that quote out of my head. When it comes to marketing, the willingness to put in extra effort at the right time can really have a big impact. Marketing campaigns usually start with an idea… But most ideas end up that way… as just ideas. Unless(!!!) you take the necessary steps to push those ideas forward, to present them to the sales and management teams, then to the point where you are pushing out an actual campaign.

It’s up to each and every one of us to figure out how much we can help. We all have different circumstances and abilities. But, if we are looking for new ways to succeed, to move our business forward, we really need to develop the willing attitude to do the “extras” to help push a project to completion.

So, here’s a toast… To all those that arrived in the office a little early this morning.. Or to those that stayed up late last night reading about new technologies or campaign ideas… Or to those that will take a shorter lunch break today, or bail out of the water cooler conversation a little early today. Putting in extra effort isn’t always fun… and it may not always solve your problems. But I promise, when it all settles down, you will not regret it.
