As long as West 62 is on the list

I found myself in a very entertaining and enlightening conversation the other night. It was with two people that I’ve known for quite a while. However, someone posed a question…. and the answers helped teach me quite a bit more about those individuals.

Here was the question: Who are your five favorite bands of all time?

Now, you may be thinking that it is simply a throw-away question. But I promise, next time you’re with a workmate or a friendly associate, when the mood is right, try asking that question.

Here’s why – the answers to that question can help you learn a bit more about that person’s personality. Listing your favorite band of all time is one thing… But with 5, I think you’ll find that people really do give it some thought. Perhaps they start thinking back to their younger years, and the bands that shaped them back then. They start thinking about songs that have had an influence on them.

By the time they’ve listed their 5 bands, I guarantee that you will gain some valuable insight into who that person really is. You’ll know a bit more about what excites them, and what stirs their emotions.

Now, when it comes to marketing – we all want to deliver messages that will move people to action. We want to provide relevant content which appeals to each individual.

To reach that point, we need data… We need to know their buying habits, their needs…. we need to know what excites them!

So, the next time you send out a survey to your customers or post a poll on your website, think about the questions that you are going to ask. Is there a way to throw in a question that will collect personal insight from each responder?

The questions do not need to be silly or goofy. That approach can work, but not if you do that all the time.

As the old saying goes, “if you want to know something about me, ask me who my friends are”… or my top 5 bands… or my favorite sodas… vacation spots…  (and on and on)

P.S. As for the title of this blog… West 62 was a band that I was in for a few years. It was a long time ago, but as you can probably guess, I can’t let go of the memories!

I have a basement full of our CDs…If you’d like one, just let me know.. It will be my pleasure to send you a free copy.
