The Christoper Walken Test


Lady Gaga has talent.

Christopher Walken has talent.

In this video, those 2 people “meet”, and the result is pretty funny.

But before you laugh too hard, remember this:

Marketers can cause laughter too.

Are you responsible for writing copy that ends up on your website, in your newsletters, presentations, or other channels? If so, you are most likely passionate about what you write and publish. If you are surrounded by the product or service that you offer every day, you may feel very comfortable listing the features and benefits that the rest of the world needs to know about.

But sometimes we need to stop, climb down off our throne, and do the Christopher Walken test.

Yes, we need to read the words that we write and publish about our company aloud.

Or better, have someone who is not very familiar with our company read the words aloud to us.

Maybe everything will sound perfect — simple, insightful and compelling. However, the chances are very high that we will cringe at a few of the things we hear.

The cliches…. the exaggerations…. the “I don’t even know what that means” moments.

If that happens, it’s a good thing! It will help you to hit the Edit button, and work on changes that will make the words you write and publish even better.

(Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to listen to Lady Gaga’s version to get Christopher Walken out of my head)
