Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

One of my favorite stories of the past week is this one:

The Big Lead started off an independent blog that focused on sports. Over the years, it developed quite a following. If you take a quick peek at it, you may understand why it gathered a lot of fans —- they produce a lot of content! No doubt, the people behind the blog put in a lot of hours of hard work.

Their hard work paid off this week, as they were acquired in a 7-figure deal.

This story provides a nice reminder when it comes to thinking about your own social media efforts.

Social media channels certainly allow people to give. The great majority of blogs, Twitter accounts, LinkedIn profiles, etc., are filled with people that provide helpful information for free.  They are willing to share the content that they’ve created for no cost.

Of course, many people give all of that away with the hope of gaining something. It might be more followers… Or an increased presence in their industry.

However, we cannot forget that our social media efforts truly can lead to additional value.

While our blog may never be purchased for a million dollars (or, maybe it will :-)), we must realize that our social media efforts are part of an overall marketing strategy. And, marketing strategies and plans should lead to sales.

If you are promoting a product or service via social media, make sure that a portion of the things that you give contribute to the health of your business.
