Your One-Legged Stool

Do you think that your job is stressful? Well, I recently heard a story about a company that produced explosives. There was one step in the manufacturing process that was absolutely extremely critical and sensitive. It required a human to vigilantly watch the thermometer.  Imagine the pressure that person felt to fight off the urge to become distracted, or to possibly doze off!

Well, this company found a way to prevent someone from even thinking about giving into that urge. They required the employee to sit on a one-legged stool.

Yes, the concentration required to stay upright ensured that they would not fall asleep on the job.

When it comes to our marketing efforts, very few of us would say that we’ve “fallen asleep” when it comes to promoting our product or service. Perhaps we are still getting something out the door to prospects and customers occasionally.

However, are we doing all that we can? Have we become too content with our current production and activities? Are we dozing??

If so, we need to find a one-legged stool for our marketing activities.

Here a few things that may help keep our creative juices flowing, and our determination to do more stronger than ever:

  • Invite an outsider to our marketing meetings (this might be an employee from another department, that perhaps has a bit of spunk… or, they could be the quiet one that just might need a slight push to share their ideas)
  • Pick an impossible-to-solve challenge — and try to brainstorm as many ways as possible that you would try to solve it
  • Change your scenery
  • Go to a trade show or seminar, and see and hear all of the things you could be doing, but aren’t yet.
  • Ask a friend or family member to check out your website or read your latest newsletter. Their outsider feedback may compel you to make positive changes.

These are just a few ideas that may help to ignite your marketing efforts. Do you have a one-legged stool that helps you? If so, let me know!
