Tablet Week

I’ve certainly had tablets on the brain quite a bit this week. Two stories caught my attention — HP’s blowout sale on TouchPad’s and a local High School’s distribution of iPads to students.

HP’s TouchPad: U Can’t Touch This

As of this morning, I’m still kicking myself for missing the news over the weekend about HP’s fire sale on the TouchPad tablets. I was able to place an order for one at the $99 level first-thing Monday morning, but I received the “your order has been canceled; overwhelming inventory demand” email from Barnes and Noble later that night (like many other people).

Sites across the globe have been overwhelmed by the demand for these items throughout the week. These are items that may never be supported by HP again. If the OS stays the same, the availability and maintenance of Apps may also stay very flat.

Thus, why is there such a demand? Most likely, the price just sounds right to a lot of people. Will this cause other tablet makers to lower their prices?

There’s an iPad in your Lunch Bag

A local high school made quite a splash in the news this week. Burlington High School distributed iPads to all incoming students.

While I’m sure this has put a smile on the faces of students that might typically dread the fact that September is right around the corner, the potential effects of this move certainly go a lot further. From afar, it certainly seems that mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones could play a positive role in the world of education. Of course, I’m sure that there will be a few fears and challenges too.

It will be fascinating to watch how the iPad changes how teachers get their job done, how students search & find information, and how parents adjust as well.

I absolutely applaud everyone that was involved to help push that project forward.

For more information, there’s a great blog post from the Principal of Burlington High School on this project here >>

Jason, have you tried Best Buy on the tablet? I’ve heard they have stock they want HP to take back…probably with no luck to them.

      Hi Cheri,
Thank you very much for that suggestion. I did try contacting some of the local BB’s on Monday, but no luck… HP continues to say that they may be releasing some more soon to their Home/Home-Office website. We’ll see if that happens!
